“Understand the neuroscience linking spinal adjustments to anxiety, depression, and the autonomic nervous system — and explain it clearly to every patient.”
This animation presents emerging neuroscience research and is intended for patient education purposes. Chiropractic care is not a treatment for mental health disorders. Always encourage patients with anxiety or depression to work with qualified mental health professionals.
- 800 million people globally are living with a mental health disorder
- 70% of surveyed chiropractic patients reported improved overall health
- 40% reported reduced stress, improved sleep, or greater relaxation
What this animation covers
- Why anxiety and depression are the two most prevalent mental health disorders globally — and how they connect to nervous system function
- How chiropractic adjustments have been shown to change the activity of the prefrontal cortex — the brain’s centre for decision-making and emotional regulation
- The role of the parasympathetic nervous system in healing, recovery, and emotional wellbeing
- How the balance between the sympathetic (“fight or flight”) and parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) branches affects mental health outcomes
- How limbic system overactivity — common in anxiety and depression — relates to dysregulated spinal input to the brain
- What research shows about chiropractic adjustments and improvements in anxiety and depression symptoms compared to other manual therapies
“This has become our most-shared social media video. The anxiety statistics at the start make people stop scrolling — and the neuroscience explanation makes them want to book. Incredible tool.”
Dr Mark T — Sports Chiropractic Clinic, Brisbane

Benefits of Chiropractic Series
Chiropractic care has many scientifically proven benefits, including improved nerve function, increased joint range of motion, and better overall health.
The Neuroscience Explained
Prefrontal Cortex Activation
Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to change activity in the prefrontal cortex. Reduced prefrontal activity is linked to anxiety and depression.
Nervous system enhancement
Adjustments support the “rest and digest” branch of the autonomic nervous system, which governs recovery, relaxation, digestion, and immune function. Many people with anxiety live in a chronically sympathetic-dominant state.
2016 Spain Randomised Controlled Trial
84 participants with tension-type headaches were randomised to receive either upper cervical (neck) adjustments or soft tissue massage alone. Anxiety and depression symptoms were measured before and after the intervention period.
Participants receiving upper cervical adjustments showed significantly greater improvements in both anxiety and depression scores compared to the soft tissue massage group.
“So many of my patients tell me they feel calmer after adjustments but I struggled to explain why. Now I just show them this video. The prefrontal cortex and ANS explanation is exactly the level of detail they need.”
